A mother was held back at the security for carrying CBD for her daughter. Nine year old Teagan Appleby suffers from a rare chromosomal disorder known as Isodicentric 15, as well as Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, which cause her to have up to 300 seizures in a day.

According to BBC, the mother, Emma had been initially refused a prescription for THC oil for her daughter in the United Kingdom. Teagan, along with her mother, Emma and her partner, Lee flew to Holland to get a prescription for the drug.

They had medical cannabis oil prescribed by a paediatric neurologist at the Erasmus Hospital in Rotterdam there and collected da 3 months’ supply of the drug for their daughter.

Emma had been preparing in well advance for her daughter’s treatment which allowed her to raise funds for Teagan. She used her savings and fundraised money to buy medical cannabis oil from the pharmacy for Teagan.

However, the family was stopped by the security as they tried to bring the drug into UK illegally. They landed at the Southend Airport in Essex, the oils worth £4,600, were seized.

UK had changed the law for medicinal cannabis use last November and made it a legal substance, however, parents are still struggling to secure prescriptions due to medical reluctance within the medical community. They are sceptical about the law enforcement and are frantically looking for effective treatments for their children.

NHS England guidance says that it expects cannabis-based products for medicinal use should ‘only be prescribed for indications where there is clear published evidence of benefit’ and in ‘patients where there is a clinical need which cannot be met by a licensed medicine and where established treatment options have been exhausted’.

The BBC report said that Emma has spoken in the Netherlands on Friday, explaining her daughter’s severe condition. She tells everyone about Teagan’s seizures, and says that they happen ‘every single night, every single day’ and they ‘don’t know if she’s going to wake up in the morning’.

She also said, This is our last resort. There’s nothing else. We’ve tried all the medications at home.If there’s a single, slight chance that this medication will help and save her I’m going to be here.”

A government spokesperson commented on the situation saying that the decision to prescribe cannabis based drugs and products for medicinal use in a clinical decision lies with the specialist hospital doctors. It is to be made with patients and their families, taking into account clinical guidance which is backed by the best international evidence.

The official further added, that it is the duty of the Border Force to enforce the law and stop illegal trafficking of substances illegally in the UK.

With this instance, many parents loose hope in the UK. Children suffering with seizures and epilepsy need a better and effective treatment for their disease, the medical community in the UK has to broaden their perspectives and render their services in such cases.

While UK struggles to get cannabis even prescribed, the U.S. citizens rejoice in the recent change of law which allows medicinal use of cannabinoid oil for two rare forms of epilepsy. The FDA announced a public hearing in May for regulating the production and consumption of CBD products, but till then, companies continue producing new line of products infused with CBD.

Lotions, creams, oils, roll-ons, gummies, candies, beverages, edible products and what not – CBD is now being infused in 3 major sectors including health, beauty and lifestyle.
