Two stores specializing in the sale of hemp-based cannabidiol oil are opening in Cobb this month.
Called “Your CBD Store,” the retail shops carry THC-free CBD products, including oils, water soluble drops, edible gummies, lotions and skin creams, bath bombs and vape cartridges. There are even products on offer for cats and dogs.
One location is opening Jan. 12 in Austell’s Brookwood Square shopping center and another is set to open six days later off Cobb Parkway in Smyrna.
Derived from hemp plants, CBD-containing oils can be sold in Georgia if they contain less than 0.3 percent THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana that gets users high, according to Johnny and Christy Davis, the husband and wife owners of the Woodstock location that opened in October.
Owners of the shops tout a host of medicinal benefits from using their products, including treatment for pain, anxiety, depression, migraines, nausea, insomnia, seizures and even post-traumatic stress disorder.
Though the Food and Drug Administration has approved the first CBD-containing drug for the treatment of some seizures, the FDA has not certified CBD itself as a medication.
Several smoke, vape and health shops across the county, however, have been selling the products for years.
But state Sen. Kay Kirkpatrick, R-east Cobb, a medical doctor trained in orthopedic surgery, warned against the growing fad, saying there haven’t been many studies to back up the CBD industry’s “cure-all” claims.
“There’s usually a grain of truth to some of it and then it just gets blown all out of proportion,” Kirkpatrick said. “There may be some science in there somewhere, but I think it’s definitely going to be overused for many things before the actual science catches up … Nobody really knows what it works for and I don’t think we’re going to know that for a while.”
Johnny Davis said he got into the growing CBD market in late 2016 along with a group of about 10 colleagues who sold Kirby vacuum cleaners. There are now 78 Your CBD Stores across the U.S. as demand for the products increases.
“We wanted to have a quality product,” Johnny Davis said. “If you’ve got a quality product, people will come back.”
Christy Davis, who credits CBD oil with relieving her anxiety, says she and her husband are starting to get repeat customers who say CBD has done wonders for their chronic pain and insomnia.
Some of those customers who are middle-aged or older have reported that the oils and creams have even allowed them to cut back on their prescription medications, she said.
As for pets, the Davis family says patrons have told them that CBD makes their old dogs seem young again.
“We had one guy come in with a 9-year-old Great Dane and a 7-year-old lab. He said it was like they were 4 and 5 years old again,” Johnny Davis said.
Another customer told him his 14-year-old pup is bounding up and down the stairs of their home again for the first time in years.
“We’re starting to get a lot of good feedback, which is awesome,” he said.
Breana Holmes, who is opening the Smyrna location not from SunTrust Park on Jan. 18, said the products have helped alleviate symptoms of the fibromyalgia she suffered from since she was 14.
“It works really good for me compared to taking a bunch of medications and having to deal with the side effects of those,” she said.
